How many words in a row can you spell correctly? At what difficulty level?
According to British linguist Michael Quinion, the phrase "spelling bee" first appeared in a Brooklyn New York newspaper in 1874. The term does not reference the insect, but comes from bee as in a "quilting bee." It denotes a group activity in which people from one community all benefit. In rural communities of the 18th century "apple bees" (harvesting apples) "(corn) husking bees" and others were common. Spelling bees were originally called "spelling matches" and "spelling contests."
