a/perture cinema

If you live ANYWHERE near Winston-Salem, NC and you enjoy film, you owe it to yourself and to the arts community to go to the new a/perture cinema. It's downtown right across the street from the Mellow Mushroom and a few blocks up from Foothills Brewing. Described rather succinctly by the theater owners themselves:

an independent theater in downtown winston salem. 2 screens, 160 seats, beer, wine, and a whole bunch of movies you’ve probably never heard of.

Outstanding. REALLY looking forward to the films they'll show. Sadly, the window for most of them is small, so if you see something you may enjoy....GO SEE IT IMMEDIATELY. It might not hang around very long.

I foresee many a 30-minute drive from Greensboro to the newest theater in the area.

John Hodgman

Drove over to Salem College after work Friday for hors d'oeuvres, wine, discussion, book signings, photos, mingling, and VIP seating within an austere and bucolic setting. Salem College was the setting. John Hodgman was the reason. Sound elitist? I hope so, you fucking bloody commoner!

Brandy and robustos in the drawing room, anyone? From April, 2008:

A book tour commenced to celebrate the paperback release of his book More Information Than You Require. Winston-Salem was the only North Carolina stop on his tour. Heard about it on NPR as the alarm clock went off one morning at 7am. In a sleepy haze I thought I heard that John Hodgman was coming to Winston-Salem. No, that couldn't be true. Alas, upon checking WFDD's website, it was TRUE! Instead of the usual 7:00pm auditorium-only ticket, I opted for the 5:30pm pre-show meet-n-greet on campus. What a treat! Hodgman was genuinely pleased to meet those of us who were there. With a warm and caring smile he engaged us all individually with empathy and care. It was really pretty sweet.

Books were signed. Wine was drunk, specifically for me the Cupcake Merlot. Photos were taken. Schmoozing and mingling were occurring. Then it was time to walk over from the fancy campus house to the auditorium and our VIP front 4 row seats. Life is indeed difficult. He spoke for almost two hours in a loosely moderated Q&A forum.

It was indeed a fantastic evening.

When's the graduation party?

Saturday afternoon I took in a bit of educational advancement; namely, a trip over to Winston-Salem and "Beer School". A couple of hours to taste their wares and learn the finer points of beer. Granted, there wasn't a whole lot that was new to me, but it was still quite an enjoyable time.

Beer School is the program that Foothills utilizes upon new hire orientation to teach them the basics of beer and brewing so that they can at least have SOME working knowledge of the beverage they are serving. This was the inaugural event of opening the program up to the public. A whopping SIXTY people signed up and paid their "tuition". An impressive turnout.

Sarah, the general manager and wife of the brewmaster, put on a Powerpoint presentation teaching us students the history of beer, the why's and when's of brewing, and the numbers behind Foothills Brewing's success. During the class, taster glasses of their beers were poured, including the elusive and rather delicious Bourbon Barrel Total Eclipse Stout. WOW.

A great way to spend an afternoon with fellow beer geeks at my favorite brewpub.

And being such a good student, my diploma even made the refrigerator:

Who wants a free XL Winston-Salem Dash t-shirt?

Behold! THIS fine garment could be yours! Went to my 2nd Kinston Indians @ Winston-Salem Warthogs, er, "Dash" game in as many nights. Went into the park with just what I had on me, and left with a fabulous prize. A smashing t-shirt. Sadly, it is sized an XL and when all is said and done would not properly showcase my stunning XXL physique.

Want it?

How'd I get it? I was selected my the mid-inning entertainment guy (due to my Indians garb) to answer trivia questions over the loudspeaker concerning the Major League film trilogy, those wacky comedies about the Cleveland Indians. I got 4 out of 5 correct, my lone mistake from Major League III and something about the South Carolina Buzz or something or another. Frankly, I was the awesomest film ever made, II sucked, and I never did in fact even see III on principle.

Kinston took a 4-0 lead after the top of the 1st inning, and it went all downhill from there. My inside-out rally cap in the 9th got Kinston a run, but in the end it was a 10-5 loss. Ouch.

My newfound followee and souvenir ball donor Ronald Rivas did not play, but did take his turn coaching 1st base during the later innings:

Sat in the same seats as Monday with Jim and Jeannette...the only 3 people seemingly clapping for Kinston. And Jeannette got herself a ball lobbed to us by Kinston's first baseman after an inning. (As I am a complete baseball dork, hollering his name over and over (Ole! Ole! Ole! Ole!) with hands awaiting did the trick.) But in any event, the rains stayed away for another evening of Cleveland Indians minor league baseball. A fun time.

A 2nd pro baseball lobbed to me? REALLY?!?!?!?

Monday, July 27, 2009. Play ball!

One of Cleveland's "L'il Indians" teams came to town for some minor league baseball. This time the High-A Carolina League Kinston Indians were over in Winston-Salem for a series. Monday and Tuesday's games will coincide nicely with my work schedule, as I always circle the dates when Kinston and Lake County and Columbus come around.

The former Winston-Salem Warthogs changed their name to the horrendous Winston-Salem Dash for their new ballpark this year. "Dash"? Yeah. Dash. The thing found in between the Winston and the Salem. Awful.

Anyway, name change for the new ballpark. Except they're playing in the old ballpark. YIKES! It seems there has been some ownership whining about who knows what, so the new ballpark set to open in 2009 stands yet unfinished. UNFINISHED! In July!!! Of the year it was to open!!! And the Warthogs, er, Dash left venerable Ernie Shore Field for their new home....except their new home ain't done. Soooooo.....they apparently struck a deal with Wake Forest University to rent out their old home, which is now known as the Wake Forest Baseball Park.

I'm not sure if the whole pissing match has anything to do with what transpired tonight, but in the 3rd inning I looked around and literally HAND COUNTED all the fans in the seats and made it all the way up to 164.

164. In the seats.

Now I'm sure the church group that had a Monday night outing were all seated in the white picnic tent in left field...all thousands of them. Because surely there were more than 164 fans there to see a ballgame.

And another thing possibly tied to the pissing match, almost all of the food kiosks and vendors were closed. Boarded up. HUH???? One spot to get food. One. Good thing I nabbed my two hot dogs early....wouldn't want to wait in that long line of 164 people if we all decided to get food at the same time!

$9 gets you behind the dugout. The guy at the ticket window saw my Cleveland Indians jersey and rightfully surmised, "behind the Kinston dugout?" Why yes, good sir. Take my $9 and get me behind the visitors!

The Indians lost 3-2. A rally in the 9th fell short as 2 men on were wiped out with a game-ending double play. But I found a new friend. A new player to watch and follow during his hopefully successful career: the lanky shortstop pictured here, Ronald Rivas.

"Why Ronald Rivas?" you may ask? Before the top of the 9th, upon leaving the field and entering the dugout, he tosses me the game-used baseball. NICE!!!! 38 years and not one foul ball or game-used ball, and all of a sudden I get a Washington Nationals foul tip from Ryan Zimmerman in June, and then a Kinston Indians inning ending ball lobbed to me in July by Ronald Rivas. All in one summer. Wow.

This game used ball business may seem silly to you, but dammit if this doesn't help lift the spirits after all the shit of the past year or two!!!!

David Sedaris in Winston-Salem

Tuesday night saw my favorite storyteller descend upon his home state of North Carolina and give a reading at the Barnes & Noble over in Winston-Salem. After work and attending to the dogs, it was a quick drive over for some coffee and (shocker) book purchases, making my "to read" queue swell to almost inconceivable volumes.

It was difficult to physically "see" him, as 9:00am that morning saw the wristband giveaway begin. Work beckoned or else I would have stood in line for one. But regardless of the enormous crowd for the 7:00pm start, a standing spot on the periphery and a well-placed speaker system allowed me to still enjoy the reading and giggle appropriately (and sometimes inappropriately) at his sardonic humor. I love him.

Notorious

There is a wine bar in downtown Winston-Salem called 6th and Vine. In addition to a healthy wine menu, it had one of the region's earlier "better beer menus", but hasn't really kept up with the deluge of craft beer flooding our state. Years ago? A great beer menu. Today? Meh. But be that as it may, the point of the dinner here was in fact a movie. A movie? Yup. Dinner and a movie outside on their patio. Every Wednesday, a film. The theme for the month of May? Alfred Hitchcock. The most recent screening? Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, and Claude Rains in the 1946 film Notorious.

It's an oldie, and here on the HofG there's always a trailer (I do so love a good trailer), so I was surprised to dig up a proper trailer on the internets. Enjoy:

"A mad adventure fraught with bold intrigue!"

During the post-WWII German roundup, those with Nazi sympathies are tried for treason. One particularly voluptuous and, ahem, engaging woman's father suffers such a fate, and she is heavied into doing undercover work for the U.S. government down in Brazil. Get "on the inside" with German businessman Alex Sebastian and find out what the devil he is up to. Scientists, plots, mysterious keepings in the locked wine cellar and the quest for its key are all unearthed until....her cover is blown and she's suspected of being an American agent. Will she be eliminated? Will she be rescued? Whatever is to become of the Nazi's in Rio, and what of their plot?

Enjoyable. A Hitchcock film I wasn't all that well-versed in, and after seeing it, can declare it wasn't all that suspenseful nor intriguing for me. An easy Matinee rating for me though.

Hunter's Pie, nifty lights, and blues.

Sounds like a full docket, huh?

Saturday night, I drove over to Winston-Salem and the outstanding Foothills Brewing to meet friends Greg and Louise for dinner. Hunter's Pie, with beef, ostrich, buffalo, and I forget whatever else gamey meats thrown in. Pretty good, been wanting to try it for some time now, but in the grand scheme of things the meat was rather bland. Garlic mashed potatoes and broiled mozzarrella cheese on top gave all the flavor. Oh well. Next time it'll be the beer brats with saurkraut.

After dinner and schmoozing with Scott the Foothills sales guy, we made our way a little further into downtown to view "light painting". What's this you ask? Arts students from University of North Carolina School of the Arts have "painted" the Millennium Building with color. Pretty damn cool. Read the story here.

Greg got some new nifty camera lenses and whatnots so he went to town while Louise and I watched the master at work plying his craft in the cold. He took some really outstanding shots. Incredible.

Shamelessly stolen (I guess it's not "stolen" if he knows about it) from his online Flickr account:
One of the artists saw (how could you NOT?) Greg's mammoth photographical equipment display and came over to chat. Cameras can be used as a great pickup line: "Hey what kind of lens is that?" Anyway, Alex Fogel came over to talk with us about the displays. Pretty interesting guy. Graduating this year. And of course, Greg had me pose in the street with him while his display was lighting up. Notice the contemplative pose peering away from the camera that Alex gives. I mean, he KNEW where Greg's camera was at. You couldn't miss it. What's he looking at? He's so artsy, pondering life and the goings on. Not content to look directly at the camera and into your very soul, but rather, looking (literally) down the road wistfully into the future, wondering what promise is held for tomorrow.

Whereas I am just a big oaf and smile grandly directly into Greg's lens like a frickin' groupie. Once the final display was over at 11:00pm, we made our way BACK to Foothills for a nightcap and a great North Carolina blues band, WSNB, "we sing nasty blues". So true. I first saw them a year or so ago at the Hickory Hops beer festival over in (appropriately enough) Hickory. Loved 'em. Every time they played Foothills on their usual bar circuit, I always had to work or was out of town. Last night however, I was off and they were there. Couldn't miss them.

We hung around and listened to some really heavy bluesy bass lines, some wicked harmonica, and just generally had ourselves a good time. Foothills Mug Club mug #17 certainly got a workout. Chatted with Jamie the brewer for a little while, learning that he's really good friends with one of the band members, which lends itself well to having WSNB play Foothills so often. Louise liked them so much, she asked me to burn a copy of their CD for her.

My musical tastes are all over the board as you may well know. And blues may be a revelation to you. But this band just "clicks" with my head. I love listening to them.

All in all, another wonderful late, late evening.

Vacation preparation today

Today was the Foothills Brewing Oktoberfest celebration from 12:00pm to 2:00am. Sadly, we could not make it for the entire time. In any event, it was a good time to prepare and practice for German foodstuffs, brews, and hot big-breasted babes in dirndls.

I mean, come on:

Anyhoo, knockwurst, bratwurst, spaetzle, red cabbage and apples, saurkraut, warm German potato salad, apple streudel. Yum! Tasty food at the buffet and malty, nutty Foothills Oktoberfest lager to wash it all down. A nice afternoon to warm up and prepare for the real deal in Munich in a few short days.

Three years of good beer in North Carolina

August 13, 2005.

We "Pop the Cap".

Governor Mike Easley signs HB 392, raising the cap on beer's legal alcohol-by-volume from 6% to 15%, leaving beer nerds throughout the state to rejoice heartily. A lot of hard work, many trips to Raleigh and the statehouse, and plenty of fundraisers throughout the state helped achieve our goal.

Has it really been 3 years since a dedicated beer run to Blacksburg or Richmond in Virginia has taken place? Awesome.

Foothills on the telly

Our local Fox affiliate sent their DESK ANCHOR, not just some rumpled street reporter, to Winston-Salem and interviewed Foothills Brewing's master brewer Jamie Bartholomaus.

And lo, how doth the Gordon male squeal like a girl.

Happy birthday!

James calls Chris to say that there is "something for him at Foothills". What? Explain. Just there's something for him to pick up next time he's there.

A couple days later, the manager of the restaurant calls and leaves a message to say that "there is something here for [Chris] for his birthday, and to just let the bartender know you're here." What?

So Kimberly is not around one night, and Chris leaves work to head to Winston-Salem and Foothills Brewery for dinner. Mug #17 is requested to be brought down for the 20-oz. pour for a 16-oz. price, and lo and behold. Two growlers were bought and paid for via telephone from the Brannons in Alexandria, VA. Nice! THANKS!!!!!!

Foothills Brewing expansion

Always good to read good press about our favorite brewer. Copy-n-paste job from today's Winston-Salem Journal to follow:

Foothills Brewing on Fourth Street in downtown Winston-Salem is doubling its capacity and making plans to move into new markets.

Foothills produced and sold a little more than 2,330 barrels of beer last year. There are 31 gallons in a barrel, or basically two kegs. In August, the microbrewery will upgrade its refrigeration equipment and add two 60-barrel fermenters, two 60-barrel conditioning tanks and a 60-barrel hot liquor tank to hold hot water.

Jamie Bartholomaus, the brewmaster and one of four owners of Foothills, said that the microbrewery is running near capacity.

"Our inventory levels on our beers have come down a little because we've sold so much," he said. "So sales are doing quite well."

The $250,000 expansion will allow Foothills to do two brews a day for a production of about 6,000 barrels this year.

"It will definitely provide us with all the growth we need for 2008 and 2009 and most of 2010," Bartholomaus said.

If business does well through 2010, the company hopes to add another production building.

Foothills opened on St. Patrick's Day in 2005. The other owners are Matt Masten, Brian Cole and Bob Hiller.

A restaurant operates daily in the front part of the microbrewery's building on Fourth Street, offering American cuisine. The microbrewery is in the back.

The restaurant accounts for 75 percent of the company's overall revenue. But, by the end of 2009, Foothills expects the brewery to increase its sales, accounting for 40 percent to 50 percent of its business.

Foothills' sales -- restaurant and brewery combined -- were $2.4 million in 2007 and are projected to reach $3 million this year. Most of the company's 65 employees work in the restaurant.

Bartholomaus plans to hire two more people to work in the brewery as a result of the expansion.

"Definitely our goal is to keep the restaurant running real steady and to grow the brewery," he said.

Foothills has won several medals for its beers, most recently a gold and silver at the international World Beer Cup in San Diego.

"Winning the medals has given us the confidence to feel that it's worth expanding, that there is demand for our product," he said.

He said that the brewery industry nationwide is ripe for growth and credits Foothills' brand recognition from strong marketing efforts and recognizable logos for a big part of its success.

"Also, our self-distributing really does drive our business here," he said. "We literally see every customer every week."

Foothills, which self-distributes its product in North Carolina only, sells its draft beer in kegs to bars and restaurants. The company recently started expanding into South Carolina but has suspended sales there until it increases its capacity. The company hopes to start sales in eastern Tennessee and southern Virginia by June 2009.

Euphonium euphoria

Kimberly and Chris both worked Saturday. Kimberly 7a-3p and Chris 2p-10p; yet another instance of our horribly incompatible schedules. Kimberly and a gaggle of coworkers then skipped a few blocks over to hit the Salute! NC Wine Festival in downtown Winston-Salem for post-work libation. Afterward, dinner at Foothills Brewing for the hospital gang. Yum.

Once Chris got out of work, he raced home to pick up Kimberly to skip over to Backstreets to the downstairs bar to hear the band Hot Politics, a jazzy funky collection of musicians where the lead singer plays a euphonium for cryin' out loud. Fellow CRNA Jeremy heard the band a week or so ago and raved about them. So, let's meet up and give 'em a listen. Backstreets was smoke-free, dark, and intimate. Big plus: the usual 10-ounce limit at Foothills for their Seeing Double IPA was poured as a full pint at Backstreets. The big downer: they served their Pinot Noir cold. Ice cold. What gives?

At any event, we enjoyed ourselves with a late night out with friends listening to some "phunk". And another late, late night for the House of Gordon? 1:00am and we're still out? Are we revisiting our youth or something?

"Ordinary people can do extraordinary things if they work together."

Barack Obama had a Town Hall meeting today in Winston-Salem, NC. Tickets became available this past weekend at the Forsyth County Board of Elections, and as our friends the Gallers live closer, they happily volunteered to nab tickets.

It began as a rather chilly morning lining up at the Joel Coliseum (or "Coliseu" as the photo suggests) Annex at 7:30am for the 9:30am door opening. Easily the BEST starting spot in line for our Obama sightings.

Our seats were pretty good on the floor in the 7th rows to the left of the podium:

The 7th row seats lended themselves to some good photos of the senator as he entered the auditorium:

It was yet another vigorous and inspiring speech (preaching to the choir with us, we know). The major soundbites were Obama's poo-pooing of the so-called "gas tax holiday" this summer and deflection of any Rev. Wright comments until a press conference scheduled immediately after the Town Hall meeting.

Yet another inspiring speech and moment to see live and in-person the (hopefully) next president of the United States.

This campaign is not about John McCain, Hillary Clinton, or even myself Barack Obama. This campaign and election is about YOU, the American people. Consequently, I cannot do this without you. So I will need your help in these next 8 days, these next 8 months, and these next 8 years to bring this country together.

Wow.
